Equity in the Built Environment

One of my favorite things I do as an architect is help people realize their dreams.  In the process of preparing a place for our clients, it is also a time to prepare our clients for the place where their vision is fulfilled.

Especially meaningful for me is when I have the privilege to work alongside women of color who are doing some amazing things in our community.  This month our firm is highlighting the work of these women who are providing health services, building community through writing and literacy, developing housing and educating youth. Each centers the perspectives of BIPOC voices and prioritizes serving them well.

As we collaborated with their organizations through design, we focused on environmental stewardship - making something new out of the remnants of what will be left behind.  Repurposing space is one of the most sustainable design decisions one can make.  We also looked for sustainable design strategies like energy efficient building systems, environmentally friendly building products and using renewable energy strategies where possible.  These design principals have guided our work ensuring both functionality and wellness.

Please follow us this Black History month to learn more about Leap Pediatric and Adolescent Care, In Black Ink, Northside Residents Redevelopment Council and 21st Century Academy and how they are creating Equity in the Built Environment.
