Designing For Wellness

With so many families still working and schooling from home, we were recently asked to share our insights on home design trends.  As our office continues to work remotely, our staff has creatively repurposed some of their spaces for work life balance.

Here’s some perspectives from our design studio:

  • Design for productivity: When working from home, designated office space can become a commodity. Find a place that will be used for work only with great daylight and away from any distractions.

  • Compartmentalize functional spaces: Setting new boundaries for “workspace” vs “leisure space” is important. Establish efficiency in your workspace by rearranging furniture, adding task lights and artwork to give it new life. An ergonomic chair and mounting arm for proper screen height can help with posture and fatigue.  Sprucing up your leisure space with a new throw, some accent pillows or even a light fixture provides a welcoming rest and break area.

  • Reimagine what you have: There are places in our homes that are overlooked.  We turned an unused patio into a multipurpose space that serves as a place to entertain friends, exercise, watch movies as well as read, work and enjoy a meal.

  • Create age-appropriate spaces: For school aged kids, we made study spaces decorated with favorite colors, activities or themes.  Comfy chairs, floor pillows and adequate lighting along with portable baskets for desks held books, electronic devices and supplies allowed these areas to also be cleaned quickly.

  • Physical Activity: Having a designated space to unwind is critical for soul restoration.

Whether you have room for a treadmill or a or a trunk to store resistance bands or yoga mats, it’s important to find a space for exercise.

The key goal is to create a place for wellness in your home to ensure that you are taking care of yourself so that you can take care of all the other people and responsibilities in your life.  Where do you find your place of restoration?
